Curzona Frances Louise Allport

Born: 1860, Australia, Tasmania, Hobart   Died: 1949, Tasmania, Hobart

Painter and printmaker. Also known as 'C.L. Allport'. Daughter of the photographer and naturalist Morton Allport (1830-1878) and grand-daughter of Mary Morton Allport (1806-1895), the first female artist of note in Australia. In 1888 her brothers financed her trip to Europe where she studied in London, Paris and Rome. She remained until 1922 having worked as an instructor at the London School of Photo Engraving and Lithography for 20 years. She again came to Britain between 1927 and 1931 before retiring to her native Tasmania. She worked mainly in linocut, lithography and watercolour depicting a variety of subjects including landscapes, flowers, birds, street scenes, markets, and portraits of young women and girls. A large collection of her work is held by the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts at the State Library of Tasmania
