Lady Mabel Marguerite Annesley

Born: 1881, UK, England, London, Annesley Lodge   Died: 1959, New Zealand

Painter and printmaker. Daughter of the fifth Earl of Annesley. She first studied at the Frank Calderon School of Animal Painting but turned to printmaking which she studied under Noel Rooke (1881-1953) at the Central School of Art and Craft, 1920-21. She became a founder member of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1924 and in the same year moved to County Down, Northern Ireland, where she worked for much of the 1930s despite losing the use of her right hand in 1928. After being evicted by the British Army from her castle home in Ulster, she emigrated to New Zealand in 1940 settling in Takaka, South Island, where she worked alongside Cedric Savage (1901-1969) and Betty Wishart (1909-1990)
