William Makepeace Thackeray

Born: 1811, India, Calcutta   Died: 1863, UK, England, London

Writer, illustrator and art critic. Thackeray left India for England at only five years old upon the death of his father, while his mother remained in India. Following a "gentleman's education," he studied briefly at Cambridge and casually studied art during his travels in Paris. Thackeray briefly attempted the life of an artist in the 1830s but soon turned to freelance journalism and illustration as his main source of income. His most successful early work was for Punch magazine. His writing - including two successful travel books, The Paris Sketch Book and The Irish Sketch Book - was often accompanied by his own illustration. In the 1860s he became editor of The Cornhill, but held the role for only two years before resigning and taking the role of columnist instead. It is in this role that he wrote and illustrated The Roundabout Papers and published his historical lectures titled The Four Georges. The majority of Thackeray's writing is satirical, and his illustrations reflect this in their humorous depictions of Victorian life
