William Heysham Overend

Painter and illustrator. Son of a flax spinner. Studied for three years under the painter Davis Cooper. As an illustrator he contributed to a number of magazines, including the Illustrated London News, and illustrated boys' books such as those of G. A. Henty. As a painter he specialised in marine paintings and exhibited regularly at both the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, becoming a member of the Royal Institute in 1886. By 1882, his reputation took him to America where he was commissioned to commemorate the Civil War conquest of New Orleans by Admiral David Porter. He met great success there and later exhibited at the World’s Columbian Exposition, Chicago 1893.
