Honoré Daumier

Born: 1808, France, Marseille   Died: 1879, Valmondois

Caricaturist, painter and sculptor. Moved with his father to Paris in 1816. Studied at the Académie Suisse before working as an assistant to the lithographer Béliard. He produced satirical lithographs on social and political issues for the 'Caricature' and the 'Charivari'. He invented the characters 'Ratapoil', a government agent, and 'Robert Macaire', an unscrupulous businessman. A republican, his political beliefs inspired his work and in 1832 he served a jail term for a cartoon attacking King Louis-Philippe (1773-1850). After 1860 he turned mainly to painting scenes of contemporary life
