Painter. Son of a clergyman. Trained under Thomas Wright ( fl.1728-37) a portrait painter in London. He practised as a portraitist of gentry through the 1740s. He travelled to Italy, 1750-57, spending a year in Venice but worked mainly in Rome where he painted portraits and landscapes for Grand Tourists. On his return to England he applied Claude's classical approach to landscapes of England and Wales. He was a founder member of the Royal Academy for which he later became Librarian. He was an alcoholic in later life
