James Drummond

Born: 1816, UK, Scotland, Edinburgh   Died: 1877, UK, Scotland, Edinburgh

Draughtsman, painter and curator. Son of a merchant who is noted for his historical knowledge of Edinburgh where they lived. Studied at the School of Design in Edinburgh. His great knowledge and interest in Scottish arms, costume and customs led him to specialise in history painting. These works, recognised for their accuracy and sensitive handling of light and shadows, were first exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1834. He also made a series of drawings of streets and buildings in Edinburgh 1848-59, later published as a portfolio of lithographs entitled ‘Old Edinburgh’. Joined the Royal Scottish Society of Antiquities in 1848 as an active fellow, council-member and curator, and was elected Academician of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1852. Having established a prominent role teaching drawing, in 1857 he was chosen as librarian. His lifelong study of historical art resulted in his appointment as curator of the Scottish National Gallery in 1868 until his death
