Display artist/maker:

William Henry Drake

Born: 1856, USA, New York   Died: 1926, USA, Los Angeles

Painter and illustrator. Studied at the Cincinnati School of Design, the Art Student’s League in New York City in the late 1880s, and the Academie Julian in Paris. He enjoyed trips to the zoo and drawing animals first hand, which earned him employment at the Museum of Natural History where he made illustrations. Having developed specialist skills in drawing wild animals, particularly wild cats, in 1894 he illustrated Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. He has been noted for his ability to give these animals almost human characteristics. Much of his work was reproduced in the magazines Century and Harper’s, and in 1902 he was made an associate member of the National Academy of Design. Moved to California in 1920
