Painter and etcher. Son of a painter and art teacher who was friends with J M W Turner. Studied at the Royal Academy from 1828 where he won various medals. Travelled to Paris in 1832 and Italy in 1833, the same year he first exhibited at the Royal Academy. He continued to exhibit there regularly until 1882. In 1838 he founded ‘The Etching Club’, whose members included Samuel Palmer, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. They published various illustrations to famous literary works until the club ceased to exist in 1878. During the 1840s he was commissioned to paint frescos for the Houses of Paliament, which led to election as associate of the Royal Academy in 1843 and Academician in 1848. He travelled to Italy and Germany in 1849 to improve his knowledge of fresco painting, and continued to paint frescos throughout the 1850s and 60s. He served as professor of painting at the Royal Academy from 1867-75, and retired as a professional artist in 1883
