Joseph Mallord William Turner

Born: 1775, UK, England, London   Died: 1851, Chelsea

Painter. Son of a barber. Studied at the Royal Academy, 1789-93, and attended classes run by the topographical artist Thomas Malton (1748-1804). He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1790 and became the youngest ever full Academician in 1802. He toured England and Wales in the 1790s, Paris and Switzerland in 1802 and Italy during the 1830s. In 1807 he was appointed Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy and Deputy Professor in 1845. He painted topographical watercolours, mythological subjects in Claudean landscapes and, most famously, light-filled, semi-abstract land and seascapes which were championed by John Ruskin and widely regarded as a precursor to Impressionism
