William Shakespeare Burton

Born: 1830, UK, England, London   Died: 1916

Painter and illustrator. Son of comic actor and playwright William Evans Burton. Studied at King’s College London and the Royal Academy during the 1850s. Began copying prints as a teenager, and subsequently found work at Punch magazine designing initial letters. First exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1946. Painted his best-known work ‘The Wounded Cavalier’ in 1855. Richly coloured, with evident influences of Millias, this painting is his closest flirtation with the Pre-Raphaelite style. Although the RA Hanging Committee initially rejected the painting, once exhibited John Ruskin deemed it “masterly”. During the 1880s and 90s, Burton practically abandoned painting due to ill health and lack of widespread recognition, but was persuaded to take it up again around 1900. These later works focused more on religious subjects, but never met the expectation of his earlier paintings
