William Paton Burton

Born: 1828, India, Madras   Died: 1883, UK, Scotland, Aberdeen

Painter and illustrator. Son of a Captain of the Indian Army. Studied in Edinburgh, eventually specialising in landscape painting. Much of his subject matter is made up of views of England, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Egypt, mostly with a subdued palette. Regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and in Suffolk Street from 1862-80. Submitted several illustrations to weekly periodicals throughout the 1860s often of woodland and rural scenes in Britain with dramatic effects of light and shadow. These were often illustrations to poems. In 1871 he helped illustrate a number of children’s books including Maraget Gatty’s ‘Inferior Animals’ from her collection of short stories for children, ‘Parables from Nature’ (1871), Edward Dalziel’s ‘Golden Thoughts from Golden Fountains’ (1868), and T. S. Arthur’s ‘The Prattler’ (1876)
