William S. Brunton

Born: 1833, Republic of Ireland, Dublin   Died: 1878, UK, England, London

Illustrator and cartoonist. Son of an engraver and printer. Studied at the Royal Dublin Society Drawing Schools from 1847 and exhibited figure paintings at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1854 and 1856. Moved to London in the late 1850s to begin a career as an illustrator, contributing to magazines such as Punch, The Illustrated Times and London Society. Known for his infectious sense of humour, he mostly produced observational comic sketches, but also illustrated children’s books. His work can sometimes be recognised by his signature of a heart made with the letters W and B, pierced by an arrow
