Ford Madox Brown

Born: 1821, France, Calais   Died: 1893, UK, England, London

Painter. Son of a purser in the navy and grandson of John Brown (1735-88), founder of the Brunonian system of medicine. Studied at the academies of Bruges, Ghent and Antwept from 1835-39, spending much of his youth travelling around Europe. Settled in London in 1846 and met Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-82) in 1848. Through Rossetti, he became close friends with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Although he never became a member, preferring to work independently, he often exhibited alongside them. Brown is recognised for painting in an intense and realistic style, dealing with social issues and the working class, most notably in ‘Work’ (1852-65). He taught drawing at a working men’s college in the 1850s and supported many charities throughout his life. Joined William Morris’s design company in 1861 where he began to integrate fine and decorative arts, designing furniture and stained glass. Maintained an interest in portrait and history painting throughout his career, his masterpiece being the twelve historical murals commissioned for Manchester Town Hall in 1878
