Display artist/maker:

Edward Frederick Brewtnall

Born: 1846, UK, England, London   Died: 1902, UK, England, London

Painter and illustrator. Son of a college headmaster. Studied at Lambeth School of Art. During the late 1860s he provided artwork for various weekly publications, particularly illustrations of Folk tales and Ballads. This remained the subject of much of his work throughout his career. First exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1868, and was a member from 1882-86. Became an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1875 and a full member in 1883, regularly exhibiting with them from 1878-1900. He also painted in oils, which he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1872-1900. Many of these were characters from popular fairy stories, recognised for their vibrant use of colour and attention to detail in a similar style to the Pre-Raphaelites. In the 1890s he illustrated books, most notably Pilgrim’s Progress in 1892
