Samuel Bough

Born: 1822, UK, England, Carlisle   Died: 1878, UK, Scotland, Edinburgh

Painter. Son of a shoemaker. Rebelled against formal education as a youth but his parents agreed to send him to London to study engraving under Thomas Allom. Rebelling once again, he returned to Carlisle on foot and for a short time taught drawing at a school in Penrith. Remained largely self-taught. Spent his early career working as a theatre scene painter in Manchester and Glasgow. Fond of walking, he regularly sought interesting views to sketch in the Lake District and across Scotland. Settled in Edinburgh in 1855, by which time he was an esteemed landscape painter. In 1856 he was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Academy, and throughout the 1860s painted his most successful views of rivers, ports and castles in Scotland. He enjoyed tremendous popularity for his ability to illustrate the fleeting effects of light and weather, particularly in the summer sky
