Joseph Austin Benwell

Born: 1816, UK, England, London, Southwark   Died: 1886, UK, England, London, Kensington

Painter, printmaker and illustrator. Son of an accountant and raised as a Quaker. Travelled around India and China from 1853-56, and Egypt and Palestine 1865-66. Known for his paintings of Indian life, landscape and architecture which he exhibited at the Royal Academy until 1883. He also illustrated various religious publications, particularly those by the Religious Tract Society, such as Sunday at Home. He produced illustrations of Indian life for the Illustrated London News from 1857-64. In his later life he focused on watercolour painting in an Orientalist style, often with Middle-Eastern subjects. During this time he exhibited most widely at institutions across the UK
