Writer, illustrator and clergyman, born Edward Bradley. Son of a surgeon. Studied at Kidderminster Grammar School and University College Durham where he graduated in 1848. Took Anglican orders from various Church of England parishes from 1850-1889, serving as curate, rector and finally vicar of Lenton, Lincolshire from 1883. Alongside his career as clergyman he wrote and drew for several publications under the pseudonym Cuthbert Bede, first appearing in Bentley’s Miscellany in 1846. His prose, poetry, articles and illustrations featured in various other publications, but perhaps his most sought-after work is Photographic Pleasures, some of the earliest cartoons about photography. In 1853 he wrote and illustrated The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green, for which he is best known. He is recognised for his use of contemporary slang and depictions of humorous situations
