Painter and Illustrator. Part of a group of talented graphic artists who worked for The Graphic, through which he was commissioned to illustrate the first serialisation of Thomas Hardy’s novel ‘The Mayor of Casterbridge’. Throughout his life he also contributed to various weekly publications including Once a Week, The Cornhill and The Illustrated London News. In 1876 he was elected Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society. He is credited for the narrative clarity and pictorial detail of his work, particularly in depictions of characters and rural genre subjects.
