Frederick Barnard

Born: 1846, UK, England, London   Died: 1896

Illustrator, caricaturist and painter. Son of a silversmith. Studied in Paris under Leon Bonnat then moved back to London and worked for various publications including Punch, The Illustrated London News and Harper’s Weekly. In 1870 he married Alice Faraday, niece of scientist Michael Faraday. In 1871 he was commissioned to illustrate nine novels by Charles Dickens, an enormous task of over 450 illustrations in an 8-year period. His focus was on character relationships rather than dramatic group scenes. He also painted large-scale canvases of social comment on London low-life, most famously ‘Saturday Night in the East End’ (1876). By the end of the 19th Century he had established a good reputation, but after his son’s death in 1891, he went in to decline. He died suddenly after his bedclothes caught fire from the pipe he was smoking
