Richard Ansdell

Born: 1815, UK, England, Liverpool   Died: 1885, UK, England, Surrey

Painter. Son of a freeman who worked at Liverpool docks. His father died young so he was educated at the Blue Coat School for orphans where his natural talent for art became apparent. After leaving school he worked as a portrait painter in Kent and a circus sign painter in the Netherlands. Studied at Liverpool Academy from 1836, focusing on animal and rural subjects, which proved popular with wealthy patrons. He is particularly noted for his depictions of various breeds of dog. Became president of the Liverpool Academy in 1845. In 1847 he moved to Kensington with his wife and 11 children. Exhibited every year at the Royal Academy from 1840-85, totalling 149 canvases, and was elected a Royal Academician in 1870. Many of his works were engraved and published throughout his life.
