Magdalene Odundo

Born: 1950, Kenya, Nairobi

Ceramicist. Educated in both Kenya and India. Studied Graphics and Commercial Art at the Nairobi Polytechnic and art and graphics at the Cambridge School of Art. Later studied at the Pottery Training Centre, Abuja, Nigeria 1974-75, informally at San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico, at the West Surrey College of Art & Design and the Royal College of Art. She has taught at the Commonwealth Institute in London 1976-79 and the Royal College of Art 1979-82. Odundo is currently Professor of Ceramics at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham (formerly the West Surrey College of Art & Design). Inspired by her Kenyan roots and by ancient historical processes, Odundo's work explores cultural identities and the role of the vessel in modern life. She largely chooses to work in terracotta, incorporating slip techniques inspired by Roman 'terra sigillata' and carefully manipulating the air and smoke levels within the kiln to produce specific finishes. Odundo's work can be seen in internationally renowned institutions such as the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
