His career began in 1980 when he exhibited a self-portrait at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and he gained further recognition in 1986 when his painting ‘The Liverpool Poets’ - featuring Adrian Henri, Roger McGough and Brian Patten - was purchased by the National Portrait Gallery. Four years later the NPG staged a solo exhibition of his work entitled ‘Contemporary Poets’ which consisted of 17 portraits alongside a poem written by each poet. He has painted portraits of numerous famous faces including Sir Bobby Charlton, Kazuo Ishiguro, Ryan Giggs and Michael Winner, among others. Edwards’ work has been shown in prestigious institutions besides the NPG, notably as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Library of Wales and National Museums Liverpool. He won the BP Portrait Award in 1994.
