Charles Haslewood Shannon

Born: 1863, UK, England, Lincolnshire, Quarrington   Died: 1937, Kew

Painter, printmaker and illustrator. Son of a vicar. After an apprenticeship with the wood engraver Charles Roberts he studied at Lambeth School of Art, 1881-85, where he met his life-long companion Charles Ricketts (1866-1951). Together they lived for a while at Whistler's house, 'The Vale', Chelsea, and in 1894 they co-founded The Vale Press in Chiswick producing 83 publications. They were avid collectors of art including an important group of drawings by Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898). He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1920. Heavily influenced by the Old Masters, particularly Titian, he painted portraits and imaginative figures though he is better known for his lithographs. His later life was limited by brain damage sustained from a ladder fall in 1929
