Thomas Burke

Born: 1749, Ireland, Dublin   Died: 1815, London

Painter and engraver. Trained in the Dublin Society's Schools under the painter Robert West (d.1770) before moving to London in 1770 where he learnt the technique of mezzotint under John Dixon. Most of Burke's mezzotints were for William Wynne Ryland (1732-1783) and engraved after the designs of Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807) who preferred his work above that of his contemporaries. Ryland probably taught him the technique of stipple engraving which Burke almost exclusively used after 1775 including for his 1783 masterpiece - a plate after Henry Fuseli's 'The Nightmare' for the publisher John Raphael Smith. Burke seemed happy to work for others and seldom issued prints himself
