Jules Jacques Veyrassat

Born: 1828, France, Paris   Died: 1893

Painter and printmaker. Studied painting under Henri Lehmann (1814-1882) in Paris and exhibited his first painting at the Salon in 1848. During the 1860s he developed a reputation as an original etcher and was consequently awarded medals for his prints in 1866 and 1869. Veyrassat was also granted the prestigious Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur in 1878. As a painter he was associated with Millet and the Barbizon School. His scenes of rural life, particularly harvests and working animals, were based on his observations of the arable landscapes of central France. Although he never travelled abroad, he was held in high regard in England largely as a result of his prints being included in P.G. Hamerton's 'Chapters on Animals' (1874) and 'Etching and Etchers' (1880)
