Born: 1722, France, Gascony, Auch   Died: 1793, London

Painter. Travelled to Spain to avoid the priesthood where he became a sea captain on the ship 'Havana'. He arrived in England in the 1750s as a prisoner-of-war and when released he became a country house painter in Northamptonshire. He moved to London circa 1758 where in 1768 he became a founder member of the Royal Academy becoming the Academy's librarian in 1792. He was appointed Marine Painter to George III in 1780. He painted maritime scenes the best known of which are the naval battles of the siege of Havana
