Jan de Bisschop

Born: 1628, Netherlands, Amsterdam   Died: 1671, Netherlands

Engraver and draughtsman. Also known as Johannes Episcopius, he trained as a lawyer and had no formal education in drawing. He began a painting studio in The Hague in 1652 and later founded a drawing school. He was strongly influenced by Bartholomeus Breenbergh (1598-1657) and painted many scenes of Italian landscapes despite never travelling to Italy. Bisschop was a founding member of the Confrerie Pictura and wrote two books, the 'Signorum Veterum Icones' in 1668-9 and 'Paradigmata Graphices variorum Artificum' in 1671, which were intended for the instruction of young artists. His reproductions of antique sculptures and drawings by Tintoretto, Bassano, Karats, Paolo Veronese, Rubens, and Anthony van Dyck were instrumental in disseminating the classical style in Holland
