Giovanni Battista Vanni

Born: 1599, Italy, Florence   Died: 1660, Italy

Painter and engraver. He was taught by Jacopo da Empoli (1551-1640), Aurelio Lomi (1556–1622), Matteo Rosselli (1578-1650) and Cristofano Allori (1577-1621). In 1624 he moved to Rome and lived in the same house as Poussin, Simon Vouet (1590-1649) and Orazio Riminaldi (1586-1631). He painted works in several Roman churches before returning to Florence in 1832 after brief visits to Venice and Parma. He spent his later life working mainly as a fresco painter but is better known as an engraver. In the last decade of his life he turned against the new Baroque manner and created drawings which were described by Baldinucci as 'non solo con franchezza, ma con pulitezza e leggiadria' [not only with frankness, but with cleanliness and gracefulness]
