Miniaturist, printmaker and caricaturist. Received no formal education in drawing and worked as a barber until he attracted the patronage of William Nisbet of Dirleton in 1785. Between 1784 and 1822 he depicted many notable Scotsmen, creating nearly nine hundred plates. His portraits were exhibited in the annual exhibitions of the Edinburgh Associated Artists from 1811 to 1816, and in the 1822 exhibition of the Institution for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts in Scotland
