Display artist/maker:

Thomas Goff Lupton

Born: 1791, UK, England, London   Died: 1873, UK, England

Engraver. Lupton began studying mezzotint-engraving in 1805 with George Clint (1770-1854), and experimented with the use of different metals for engraving plates. His engraving on soft steel of the comedian Jospeh Munden (1758-1832), after Clint, was awarded the Isis Gold Medal of the Society of Arts. He consequently became one of the most highly regarded engravers of singly issued mezzotints to use steel plates, and went on to produce over a hundred portaits as well as many other works after J.M.W. Turner and other artists. He also exhibited crayon portraits at the Royal Academy, and was employed by Turner on the 'Liber Studiorum'. In 1856 he engraved the plates for 'The Harbours of England' by John Ruskin
