Salvator Rosa

Born: 1615, Italy, Naples, Arenella   Died: 1673, Rome

Painter and etcher. Pupil of Aniello Falcone (1607-1656) in Naples. He also studied briefly in Rome, 1635, but returned to Naples where he established himself as a painter of landscapes and battle scenes. He moved to Rome again in 1639 but spent much of the 1640s working in Florence under the patronage of Cardinal Giovanni Carlo de' Medici. He eventually settled in Rome in 1649. A self-confident character, he was also a poet, musician, satirist and actor - talents which made him the central figure of the Florentine artistic-literary circle 'Accademia dei Percossi'. He painted dark, turbulent landscapes, often populated by bandits, which later inspired the Sublime Movement. He turned to etching in the 1660s and spent his last years painting historical and religious works
