Eduard Kaiser

Born: 1820, Austria, Graz   Died: 1895, Vienna

Painter and printmaker. Studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in Vienna under Josef Danhauser and quickly established a reputation as a portraitist specialising in lithography. He was a leading protagonist in the 1848 revolution and recorded the portraits of many of his fellow insurgents. Consequently, he was favoured by Emperor Francis Joseph I who commissioned Kaiser for a series of portrait lithographs of the Emperor and the Empress. Other sitters included Clara and Robert Schumann, the poet Friedrich Hebbel, and the singer Adelaide Ristori
