Roy Willingham

Printmaker. Willingham studied for a BA in painting and printmaking at the Central School of Art and Design, London, 1976-9. He also completed advanced studies in printmaking there, 1979-80. In 1980, he taught life drawing at the Sir John Cass School of Art and in 1989, was visiting lecturer at the Byam Shaw School of Art. He has exhibited in the UK, including a group show including Anne Desmet (born 1952) and Eric Gill (1882-1940) at Duncan Camphell Contemporary Art, London, in 1992, and internationally, for example in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Russia and Malta. He served on the Committee on teh Printmakers Council, 1984-94 and was its Treasurer, 1992-6. In 2009, he became an Associate of the Royal Society of Painters-Printmakers and was elected full member in 2013. 2015, he was shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize. Willingham’s ideas come from landscapes and cityscapes sketched on the spot during walks, and the history, language and local symbolism of a place. He creates, mainly abstract, lino- and woodcuts, wood engravings, monoprints, digital images and combinations of all mentioned techniques.
