Muirhead Bone

Born: 1876, UK, Scotland, Glasgow   Died: 1953, , Oxford

Printmaker and painter. Son of a journalist. Served an apprenticeship with an architect whilst also studying evening classes at Glasgow School of Art. He made his first print, a lithograph, in 1898 and by 1901 had moved to London where he became a member of The New English Art Club. In 1916 he was appointed the first Official War Artist during the First World War working in France and experiencing the Somme. During the 1920s and 30s he found his subject matter on his extensive travels through France, Spain and America. In 1940 he was again appointed an Official War artist during the Second World War. He is best known for his etchings and drypoints of urban scenes, particularly construction sites and shipyards, where he utilises dynamic compositions and dramatic shafts of light to display the tremendous scale of the buildings
