Display artist/maker:

Mehmet Gursoy

Born: 1951, Turkey

Ceramicist. Gursoy is a leading ceramic artist living, working, and teaching in Katahya, one of the most important ceramic centres in Turkey specialising in traditional designs. Determined to revitalise the ancient tradition of ceramic decoration known as Cini, originally associated with Isnik (1450-1700), Gursoy opened his workshop in 1987.

The ceramics are made in fine white earthenware in traditional forms including plates, flasks and beakers. The designs are stencilled onto the surface and then hand decorated with underglaze pigments, a difficult technique which does not allow for any errors. The pieces are covered in a clear glaze and fired in a modern electric kiln to create the rich blues, reds, greens, and turquoises of the finished work.

In 2003, Gursoy was one of the demonstrators at the International Ceramics Festival in Aberystwyth and there was an exhibition of his work in the Ceramic Gallery.
