Ian Gregory

Born: 1942

Ceramicist. He studied at Southend Art School but was also interested in the dramatic arts and at first worked in the entertainment industry. He produced several hit records in the late 1950s and early 1960s but became disillusioned with the industry and relocated his family to rural Dorset at the end of the 1960s. He produced ceramic and sculptural work including miniature furniture and large architectural pieces and began to develop his salt-glaze techniques. He is now best known for his figurative work, especially of animals. He has taught at various higher education institutes throughout his career in the UK, as well as lecturing in America and South Korea. He is also known for making alternative kilns as at the 2005 International Ceramics Festival at Aberystwyth, he made a mobile rocket kiln. He has written a number of books on ceramics including Sculptural Ceramics, 1999, Kiln Building, 2002, Alternative Kilns, 2005
