William Havell

Born: 1782, UK, England, Reading   Died: 1857, London

Painter. Son of a drawing master in Reading. Moved to London in 1804 but spent most of the year 1807 touring and sketching in the Lake District. He was a founder member of the Society of Painters in Watercolour but resigned from the Society in 1814. He briefly worked in China (Beijing) before working in India, 1816-26, as a portraitist of British government officials. After returning to England in 1826 he toured Italy with Thomas Uwins (1782-1857), 1828-29. He painted landscapes, particularly of the Thames, and portraits in oil and watercolour but also designed bookplates which were engraved by Robert Havell
