Display artist/maker:

Sandor Kescemeti

Born: 1947, Hungary, Gyula

Ceramicist. Born in Gyula, Hungary, Kecskemeti studied ceramics with Tamas Laszlo before he went to the Budapest Academy of Applied Arts. By the end of the 1970s he had moved away from making thrown functional ware and started making sculptural pieces from raw bricks and folded clay. He also works with materials other than clay, including paper, wood, and bronze and has worked in theatre and film set design.

His large sculptures are influenced by megalithic monuments such as Stonehenge, where he demonstrates concern for weight, balance and support. He has taught ceramics at the International Ceramics Studio, Kecskemet since the mid-1980s. He was a participant in the International Ceramics Festival at Aberystwyth in 1997. He is also a member of the International Academy of Ceramics.
