Display artist/maker:

Scottie Wilson

Born: 1888, UK, England, London   Died: 1972, UK, England, London

Ceramicist. Born in London but brought up in Glasgow, family poverty meant Wilson left school at the age of nine to sell newspapers, and later work as a market trader. After service in the Scottish Rifles on the Western Front during the First World War, he emigrated to Toronto, Canada where he had a second-hand shop.

Wilson began to draw on the table, using an ink pen that had come into the shop, and became a self-taught artist. Following some success in Canada, he returned to Britain in 1945 and exhibited at the Arcade Gallery. His work was admired by Jean Dubuffet, Pablo Picasso, and André Breton.

In the 1960s Wilson began to create paintings on plates and was commissioned by Royal Worcester to design a series of dinnerware which was produced until 1965. The pattern was based on Native American totem poles which he had studied in Canada.
