Display artist/maker:

Tulla Elieson

Born: 1950, Norway

Ceramicist. Elieson studied at the Bath Academy of Art in England from 1970-74. Initially she made black terracotta functional ware decorated with coloured slip. Later she moved towards installations in clay and large abstract landscapes on clay forms. She is influenced by the Norwegian coastline whose colours dominate her work.

At the 1993 International Potters Festival, Aberystwyth, she created a 32-foot long boat from rusty metal armament mats, the walls of the grid-like frame were made up of plastic bags, some containing polluted water and others with danger symbols printed on them. At the front of the boat was a clay figurehead with a dirty water-filled acrylic globe behind it.

She won a jury prize at the 4th Cairo Biennale for Ceramics in 1998, and the silver medal at the 52nd International Ceramic Competition at Faenza, Italy in 2001.
