Swansea Pottery

   Active: 1764-1870

Founded in 1764 by William Coles, the Cambrian Pottery on the banks of the River Tawe, Swansea operated until 1870. Initially the pottery produced coarse redware for agricultural and domestic use, and various cream and lead-glazed earthenware.

When owner of the Nantgarw Pottery, William Billingsley, had trouble making a profit at his factory, he collaborated with Lewis Weston Dillwyn, then manager at the Cambrian Pottery, leading to the re-application of his soft-paste porcelain recipe at the Cambrian Pottery. Dillwyn was so impressed with the recipe it was adapted to create porcelain with very fine painted decorations between 1814 and 1817, made by William Weston Young and Thomas Pardoe. The porcelain compared very favourably with the products of the French factory at Sevres.
