Display artist/maker:

Peter Meanley

Born: 1944, UK, England, Huddersfield

Ceramicist. Meanley trained at the York School of Art as a painter and the Royal College of Art as a ceramic designer. He taught ceramics at the University of Ulster until his retirement. A chance photograph of an 18th century ‘Whieldon’ teapot made a lasting impression on Meanley, and around the same time he became interested in salt-glazing, the orange-peel characteristics of which can be seen in much of his work.

He makes one-off functioning teapots with exaggerated features combining a variety of techniques including press-moulding, extruding, pulling, throwing, turning, and cutting to assemble the sculptural forms. Meanley’s work is held in many national and international collections and museums.
