Sebastian Blackie

Born: 1949, UK, England, Huntingdonshire

Ceramicist. He trained at Farnham and Goldsmiths in London, as an unofficial postgraduate he made big slab dishes but then became interested in throwing vessel forms. Throwing didn't fit in with his teaching and interest in fire, and in the 1970s he became interested in coiling, which he first learned from Madeline O'Dundo who was a former student of Ladi Kwali. He then became interested in very early pottery and was also influenced by Rioji Koie who he worked with in Britain. In 1989 he was a demonstrator at the International Ceramics Festival where he constructed and fired a paper kiln. He has continued his interest in alternative kiln making and has traveled widely including to Norway, Japan and Australia to show and demonstrate his kilns. He has been an influential tutor both at Farnham and Derby
