Display artist/maker:

Gerhild Tschachler-Nagy

Born: 1954, Austria, Steiermark, Leutschach

Ceramicist. Although Austrian, she first took up ceramics when she lived for a period in England in the 1970s. She continued to attend international seminars in West Germany and the USA whilst working as a free-lance ceramic artist (1977-1982). In 1982, she had an educational stay in the USA, and another in 1985-1986 where the primitive firing workshops of Hal Reidegger were a formative influence. She works in stoneware making burnished vessels, sculptural forms and ceramic installation pieces. Her work is created in low-salt firings in experimental wood-fired kilns that she often builds herself. The surface treatments are achieved in the firing process in which pieces may be wrapped in metal bands, in salted straw, or in rags steeped in a solution of metal salts. Skilful kiln packing also adds to the effects achieved in the firing. She has exhibited and taught ceramics in Austria, USA and Paris and has undertaken a number of kiln-building workshops. She was a demonstrator at the International Potters Festival in Aberystwyth in 1991
