Jean Honoré Fragonard

Born: 1732, France, Grasse   Died: 1806, Paris

Painter. Pupil of Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (1699-1779) and François Boucher (1703-1770), the latter circa 1749. After winning the Prix de Rome in 1752 he enrolled at the Ecole Royale des Elèves Protégés, 1753-56. He worked in Italy between 1756 and 1761 travelling with the painter Hubert Robert (1733-1808). His early work consisted of landscapes and historical pictures but he then moved towards more light hearted, erotic, paintings in the Rococo style. After the French Revolution his work fell out of favour and he died in poverty
