Display artist/maker:

Mary Rose Young

Born: 1958, UK, England, Oxfordshire, Thame

Ceramicist. Young’s interest in ceramics began at Cheltenham College of Art while studying drawing and illustration. She went on to train in ceramics at Wolverhampton Polytechnic. An Enterprise Allowance Scheme and advice from Mick Casson enabled her to further develop her throwing and decorating techniques, although drawing remained an important source of inspiration.

Young sold her work from a barrow in Bristol’s quayside area, but her career developed significantly with success at the Chelsea Crafts Fair. The second time she participated, her work was a sell-out with further backorders from the United States. This led to a commission by ‘The Observer’ for a ceramic filofax cover, completed with 3D roses, sheep, and a giraffe. Popularity increased and demand began to outstrip supply.

Young makes rich, colourful earthenware with painted and applied decoration. She uses a variety of decorative modes, including a pointillist technique, abstract patterns, and naturalistic painting. Young’s output ranges from multi-coloured tableware to larger, architectural pieces.
