Jim Robison

Born: 1939, USA, Missouri

Ceramicist. He initially trained as a Jet Mechanic in the USAF. He studied fine art at Graceland College Iowa and obtained an MA in Sculpture and Ceramics from Eastern Michigan University. In 1973 he set up both home and studio in Holmfirth, Yorkshire, where he 'has become a Yorkshire man in everything but accent'. He does make some small, thrown, domestic ware but is best known for his large, sculptural work. His work is slab built, using an antique mangle to roll and re-roll prepared sheets of clay, giving irregular, uneven edges which are incorporated into the finished work. The pieces are decorated with slips which are applied either by painting, sponging or stencilling. He has exhibited widely and commissioned work has included a large replica wine storage vessel forthe Jorvik Viking Museum.Jim Robison is well known as the enthusiastic, knowledgeable Master of Ceremonies, lecturer and demonstrator at the biennial International Ceramics Festival at Aberystwyth. He has recently written 'Large Scale Ceramics' published by American Ceramics Society 2005
