Display artist/maker:

Paul Soldner

Born: 1921, USA, Illinois, Summerfield   Died: 2011, USA, California, Claremont

Ceramicist. Known as the ‘Father of American Raku’, Soldner was born in the USA and trained at the University of Colorado and Otis Institute, California, where he was a student of Peter Voulkos. He first tried raku in 1960 and soon made the technique his major medium of expression.

Soldner was known for his monumental floor pots, which would be eight or nine feet tall, and ‘pedestal pieces’: thrown and altered sculptural clay forms with differing textures. In 1991 he retired as Professor of Ceramics at Scripps College, California and continued to work at his home in Aspen, Colorado. Soldner’s works have been exhibited internationally.
