Ceramicist. Known as the Father of American Raku, Soldner was born in the United States and trained at University of Colorado and Otis Institute, California where he was a student of Peter Voulkos. He first tried Raku in 1960 and soon made the technique his major medium of expression. He is known for his monumental floor pots, which can be 8 or 9 feet high. He now makes 'pedestal pieces' which are thrown and altered sculptural clay forms, with differing textures and forms. In 1991 he retired as Professor of Ceramics at Scripps College, California, but continued to work at his home in Aspen. He died in 2011 in Claremont, California where he also maintained a studio.
