Dennis Moore

Born: 1908   Died: 1977

Ceramicist. Educated in law and qualified as a solictior, his interest in ceramics was stimulated when he saw an exhibition of chinese ceramics in 1944. Following contacts with Bernard Leach he was encouraged in 1948 to start his own pottery at Green Dene in Surrey, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. He is best remembered in the ceramics field as one of the instigators and founder members of the Craftsmen Potters Association. Being self taught, his work is individual and he always encouraged the independence and individuality of other potters. He favoured smoky 'sang de boeuf' and aubergine glazes. As well as a potter, he was a skilled cellist and in the 1940s played in the Surrey Philharmonic under Vaughan Williams
